It was a safe and rescue-free annual event to get people acquainted with aquatics, said Doniphan Browder, Aquatic Center supervisor for the Roanoke Rapids Parks and Recreation Department. The turnout ranked higher than last year with 300 people at the pool for a free-swim afternoon. “It’s our way of reaching out to the community,” he said.

The event features a free day of swimming at the outdoor pool but according to Browder, it takes it a step further, “We’re here to serve the community and we hope people will come and enjoy the pool and have a great time.”

When participants got hungry they enjoyed funnel cakes from MOJO’s Cakes and Stuff, not to mention there were lots of door prizes from local businesses.

“We just want to thank all those businesses that donated for the event,” Browder said. He thanked Dixie Screen Printing, the U.S. Army, The Eye Care Center, Starbucks, Go-Mix Christian Radio, The Shop, Southern Loans and the Texas Steak House.

Browder added anyone can enjoy the outdoor pool daily, from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $2.60 for residents and $5.20 for non-residents.
