ROANOKE RAPIDS — Mr. Harry James Jones, son of the late Eddie and Jannie Jones, was born Dec. 20, 1946, in Halifax County. His purpose driven and busy life came to a close on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

He received his education through the public schools of Halifax County, and was a 1966 graduate of the former John Armstrong Chaloner High School in Roanoke Rapids. He became employed with the Bibb Company, Clarks and Star Furniture. He also honored his country in the United States Army, served during the Vietnam War, and was honorable discharged in 1972

During his early life, he professed faith in Christ and joined Twilight Baptist Church. He later moved his membership to London Missionary Baptist Church and remained until his death. He was a trustee and a devoted member who loved his church.

He was united in holy matrimony to the former Gloria Jean Powers, who preceded him in death. God blessed this union with two children. He was a caring, loving, dedicated husband and father who impacted the lives of those around him in many positive ways.

One of his greatest joys was helping people. Anyone he could help, he did help. He had a great passion for baseball and played until his health declined. However, that did not stop him. If you could not find him on Friday nights, he was at a Mudcat’s game with his three close buddies, Lee Martin, Ray Scott and Mac Green, whom he loved dearly.

In addition to his parents and wife, he has now been rejoined with his siblings, James Arthur, Curtis, Melvin, Johnnie, Madglean, Alvester, and his twin sister, Hazel. May you all rest in peace and have a blessed reunion.

Those remaining to forever treasure the many precious memories of his life are his son, Christopher James Jones of the home; his daughter, Kristi Jones Burden of Durham; two grandchildren, Anthony James Burden and Krista Jameise Burden of Durham; his son-in-law, Anthony Burden of Durham; four brothers, Cecil T. Jones (Marshell) of Littleton, Wiley Jones, Robert H. Jones (Carolyn) and Levi E. Jones (Clarine) all of Roanoke Rapids; four sisters, Margaret C. Carter, Mary J. Daniel, Virginia G. Ghee and Ruby J. Gerald (Leviska), all of Roanoke Rapids; four sisters-in-law, Bertha and Celestine Jones and Blinda and Linda McCoy; four brothers-in-law, Lonnie Barfield, Harvey and Raymond McCoy and Robert L. Newell; three aunts, Eliza Bowser, Sally Faulcon, Emma Powell, Clara Underdue, Mary Myers and Laura Newell; a special friend, Shirley Green Lewis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who will all miss him.

The body will repose until 8:30 p.m., today, July 23, at Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, which is handling the arrangements.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, July 24, at  London Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Elbert E. Lee, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will also repose for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
