A mammogram is a special type of X-ray used to detect breast cancer. Mammograms help physicians find tumors and assist them in determining if tumors are benign or malignant.

“Approval by these government agencies of our mammogram services indicates that we provide excellent patient care,” said Karen Daniels, RN, vice president of nursing at Halifax Regional.

“The inspectors evaluated our entire mammography service, including radiation protection, qualifications of the staff, equipment and patient reports,” said Terry Mason, mammography supervisor. “There were no deficiencies.”

The Women’s Imaging Center also is accredited by the American College of Radiology.

Halifax Regional follows the guidelines of the American Cancer Society, which recommends women have annual mammograms beginning at age 40. “Early detection is the best protection,” said Mason, who noted women have a one out of eight chance of developing breast cancer.

To schedule a mammogram, call 535-8888. The Roanoke Valley Women’s Imaging Center is located at Building C at Halifax Medical Park.
