Lt. Bobby Martin told the Daily Herald the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on Colonial Drive, in Roanoke Rapids, after midnight on July 27.

“When Deputy Joe Sealy arrived he noticed a large 36-inch television sitting in the front yard of a residence with a blanket on top and a VCR sitting by the road along with a Navy blue pillowcase,” Martin said via e-mail.

A witness told the deputy he just returned home and recognized a person who was carrying items from the victim’s home to the suspect’s home.

The witness also communicated to Sealy the suspect saw him then he quickly went back to his residence.

Also, Sealy found out the victim of the break-in was out of town.

Martin commented when Sealy approached the side door of the victim’s home, he noticed the glass was broken, damage was done to the door and several items were turned over and disturbed.

After knocking on the suspect’s door for a few minutes, “The suspect came to the door sweating profusely, Deputy Sealy stepped in to speak with the suspect when he noticed two Navy blue pillow cases containing unknown items sitting on the couch ... The pillow cases resembled the one in the front yard of the victim’s home,” Martin said.

James Michael Doughten, 31, was detained for suspicion of breaking and entering. After Deputy Corey Griffin arrived to assist at the scene, he spoke to the suspect who finally told the officers he was responsible for the breaking and entering. Martin then stated the deputies were led back to the suspect’s house where stolen items were stored.

Doughten was charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, two counts of possession of stolen goods, larceny of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and injury to real property.

Doughten was placed in the Halifax County Jail under a $25,000 bond and has a Sept. 30 court date.

On the residential crime Martin shared, “This case was solved due to neighbors looking out for one another.”
