The United States Achievement Academy announced that Latara N. McGuire from Gaston has been named All-American Scholar.

The USAA has established the All-American Scholar Award program to offer deserved recognition to superior student who excel in the academic disciplines. The All-American scholars must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school instructor, counselor or other qualified sponsor are accepted.

McGuire, who attends Gaston Middle School, was nominated by Dequetta Boyd and will appear in the All-American Scholar Yearbook which is published nationally.

She is the daughter of Bruce and Evette McGuire of Gaston and the granddaughter of Nellie and Herbert Wilkins of Gaston and Jennie Ruth McGuire of Scotland Neck.

Piercy graduates

Dr. Michelle Antoinette Piercy graduated May 10 Magna Cum Laude with a Doctorate in Pharmacy from Hampton University in Hampton, Va. While at Hampton, she maintained a grade point average of 3.78 and was actively involved in the Student National Pharmaceutical Association, American Pharmacists Association, American Society of Consultant Pharmacist, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Virginia Pharmacist Association and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.

During her matriculation at Hampton, Piercy was inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Mu  Honor Society and Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She is a 2003 graduate of the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School in Petersburg, Va.

She is the daughter of Belinda and Michael Piercy Sr. of Petersburg and the sister of Michael Piercy Jr. She is the granddaughter of Herbert and Delores Simmons of Halifax and Claude and Louise Piercy of South Hill, Va.

Piercy will be working as a pharmacist for Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
