The opening song, with Margret Person at the piano, the group sang was “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah.” Patricia Peterson read Psalms 95 for the morning scripture lesson and the morning prayer and blessing for the meal were offered by Jesse J. Rook. The OMS chanted “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.”

The thoughts for the day were delivered by Runellar Rook reading “The Elderly Couple”; Virginia Hines, “When It’s Family”; and a joke by Margaret Person entitled “The Devil and His Sister.”

Vice president Levy White called all July birthday babies to the roundtable for best wishes in August.

Hazel Hendricks singed in as the elder at 87-years-old and Gracie Alston was the youngest at age 73. Others celebrating were Olivia McGee, Beatrice Wilkins, Glenn Brown and Claude Ford. The OMS sang “Happy Birthday to You” and showered the honorees with cards, gifts and good wishes.

The group dined on a delicious meal prepared by: Barbara Reynolds Demery, Edith Miles, Doretha Whitfield, Jacque Alexis and the birthday babies provided cake and ice cream.

After lunch and fellowship hour, White called the business session to order beginning with roll call by Secretary Cynthia Coles and Treasurer Virginia Hines, assisted by Dorothy Lawrence. Hazel Ford offered the sick and shut-in list with assistance from the membership.

Next, the director thanked the July birthday babies for foregoing the celebration on the last Tuesday in July, in order to pay tribute to late member Doris A. Simons.

Doris Taylor Davis was not with the group for the day due to the passing of her aunt, Rev. Delesta Taylor Hassell, Chesapeake, Va.

Katherine B. Lee donated a Peace Lilly to the Tillery Community Center she received from the First Baptist Church, in Weldon, as support in the passing of Doris A. Simons.

Reports began with member Kenneth Skinner reporting on the Walk-A-Thon held by the Brawley Chapter of The Committee to Save Education in Halifax County on Aug. 1 in downtown Scotland Neck., as the group continues to protest the close of the historic Brawley school. The seniors were reminded the committee meets each Monday evening at New Birth Tabernacle in Scotland Neck at 7 p.m. For information contact Renee Hasty at 252-445-3621.

Gary R. Grant announced the invitations are in the mail for his birthday celebration on Aug. 22.

Doris T. Davis brought for the membership to fill out for participation in the survey on transportation needs for Halifax County.

Grant informed the group that the Summer Youth Empowerment Camp was off to the Norfolk Zoo and that closing activities would be held on Thursday, evening at the Tillery Community Center at 6 p.m.

There was a brief discussion regarding HB 1335 introduced by Sen. Albertson of Duplin County which would strip the Environmental Management Committee of any powers to make and enforce rules governing industrial hog operations and water contamination in North Carolina.  Grant said it is sad that such a bill has been passed by the NC Senate, but even more troubling is the fact that Sen. Ed Jones voted in favor of it.

Dorothy Lawrence thanked all the women and men who recently supported her church program at Royal Light Holiness Church.

White called for the report from Coles who reported 45-OMS members and one visitor, Terrance Owens of Tillery, grandson of Coles. She also gave the financial report for the day.

The song “So Glad I’m Here” wrapped up the meeting, along with the Prayer of Benediction by Hazel Ford, followed by the OMS shout “Have a good week, love everybody, and behave yourself.”

OMS meets each Tuesday at the Tillery Community Center at 11:30 a.m. and all are welcome.
