Additional safety?

If Wal-Mart is so concerned about beautification and rearranging the store, what about security at Wal-Mart and in the parking lot?

Permission to whack away?

I am with you 100 percent about the young men walking around with their pants hanging down … It’s a disgrace to the human race … There should be a law that when we ladies see a butt hanging out we can give it a good whack.

Who’s driving?

How many teachers in the school district with a master’s degree were asked to drive a school bus when they laid off the bus drivers?

How old are you?

In response to the comment — “If you love your country, you would not have voted for Obama,” tell me do you really think this country is the same as it was 25 years ago. If you want your children to grow up in the same country you grew up in, tell me how old are you? You can’t be anymore than 20 years old. And if your are 20 years old and you think the last 20 years have been OK, then you have a problem.

Law needed

I agree with the person who wants young men to pull up their pants … There should be a law and they should be made to pull up their pants.

Uniforms are a bust

Twelve years ago when Dr. Willie Gilchrist introduced uniforms in the Halifax County School system. He promised us the uniforms would level the playing field, increase the children’s academic scores and make it cheaper to buy school clothes. I have yet to see any of that happen.

Story hits heart

To Tia Bedwell … Your story made me cry … I am sorry for your loss because I love my dog, too, and could not imagine not having him in my life.

Pork unhealthy in reform

The person is absolutely right, we do need health care reform, but we don’t need all the other things they will stuff down our throats with the reform … If there is one lesson we have learned in this country, is a bill never goes through Congress the way it was written. It is always laden with pork and the health care bills will be no different.

" I am a member of the State Employees Credit Union and I find it very irritating when I have to wait in line behind someone that does not have their deposits slips, etc. filled out when they approach the teller line. I have mine filled out and I think it's very rude and selfish when me and people like myself have our transactions ready and some do not. The credit union provides us with very nice ticket counters so we can have our business ready, so take advantage of it! "

" My opinion concerning the new health care program: You might as well shut up and open your mouth real wide because they are going to shove it down your throat and tell you to swallow it. It will be bitter and leave a bad taste in your mouth. You will have no choice, you will have to swallow it every time you are sick if you don't die waiting for help. "

" Attention parents in North Carolina there is a bicycle helmet law. I wish the local police would start to enforce this. With school starting and in general there too many kids riding around not wearing helmets. Do we have to wait for a tragedy to happen before something is done. If your child rides a bike make them wear a helmet. Would you let them ride in a car without a seat belt. I would hope not! "

" Dear Mr. Editor: Your editorial in the 08/23/2009 issue, "School board must shoulder the blame...", was the best piece of its sort the Daily Herald has published in twenty-five years.

It is indeed time to "...sweep away the vestiges of cronyism and ego-driven policy making too often found in the district's administration and decision-making process."

During her tenure, Dr. Middleton endured much guff from both the school board and the County Commissioners. The Herald might consider suggesting to the latter that they take a less adversarial approach to dealing with educational matters: it's their county, too. "
