Multiple media outlets reported Thursday that Duke University Health System is going ahead with a new cancer center and a seven-story hospital tower. The effort is expected to employ up to 1,500 construction workers and require another 1,000 full-time staffers once it’s completed.

Duke health system’s CEO Victor Dzau says the expansion is needed because the system’s three hospitals are full.

Hospital planner Dawn Carter said Duke expects the expansion will raise its international reputation.
