Thelma Rebecca ‘Becky’ Mills Sykes GASTON — Thelma Rebecca “Becky” Mills Sykes, 73, of Gaston, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at Guardian Care of Roanoke Rapids. She was born May 5, 1936, in Halifax County, to the late James Willis Mills and Thelma Louise Pittman. She attended elementary school in Gaston and Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, Va. Mrs. Sykes received her licensed practical nurse training at Lee Memorial Hospital in Norfolk, Va. She received her RN training at Halifax Community College and was a Hospice coordinator for Halifax County. She is survived by her husband, Harry Lee Sykes of Gaston; her son, Tony L. Sykes and his wife, Sharon, of Littleton; her grandchildren, Tony Lee “T.L.” Sykes II, Kelly Crandell and her husband, Charlie, and Wendy France and her husband, Jody; her great-grandchildren, Kayla Joe Salmon, Elisa Norwood, Will Crandell, Coby Crandell, Zachary Vaughan and Hunter France; a brother, James Douglas “Doug” Mills and his wife, Jeannie, of Roanoke Rapids; a sister, Barbara “Bobbie” Jean Mills of Norfolk; and her special nephews, David, Danny and Forrest Mills. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 6, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements, and other times at 277 Wildwood Circle, Littleton NC 2785. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 7, at the funeral home, with Dr. Julian Mills and the Rev. Calvin Malphass officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
