HALIFAX — Umphrey Tillery Jr., affectionately known as “Pat” was born on Sept. 24, 1938. He entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009.

He was the son of the late Umphrey Tillery Sr. and Mazie Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Samuel and William Jones. He accepted Christ at an early age at Galilee Baptist Church where he later served as trustee.

Born and raised in Tillery, he was educated in the Halifax County School System. He was united in marriage on Sept. 7, 1961, to Doris Peterson. To that union was born six children.

He later moved to Waterbury, Conn., where he furthered his education at Kaynor Technical School and became a licensed automotive mechanic. After many years of dedicated service, Pat retired from the Connecticut Department of Transportation. He was known for his involvement in community service where he was a faithful volunteer in many local church and civic organizations in Waterbury and Halifax County.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Doris; three daughters, Delores Peterson, Patricia Tillery-Berger (Raymond) and Shelia Tillery-Jenkins (Dennis); three sons, Dennis, John and Humphrey Tillery; five sisters, Sandra L. Baytops (Larry), Rosalind Jones-Johnson (Jerome), Estelle Edmonds Bussey, Dorothy L. Smith, and Shirley Edmonds; three brothers, James N. Edmonds (Jamie), Ruben L. Edmonds (Peggy) and Cecil Jones; 13 grandchildren including Daquan Parker who was reared in the home; 12 great-grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., with funeral services at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 11, at Galilee Baptist Church, 6417 Highway 561, Tillery, with the Dr. Rev. James Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Edmonds Family Cemetery in Tillery.

H.D. Pope Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements.
