HALIFAX COUNTY — Good news for people who care to recycle. Patsy Grant,

a resident of Roanoke Rapids, said she’s always been an avid recycler

and she misses the days when you could separate your trash and leave it

on the curb. “We use to do it here in town, then they stopped it.”

But Grant realized she doesn’t have to give up helping the environment,

she just has to put forth a little extra effort. Grant recently

discovered Halifax County’s Solid Waste Convenience Centers and she

couldn’t wait to share the news. “I found out about these centers, so I

started going out there,” she said.

Halifax County has seven convenience centers which separate recyclable

items. Run by Waste Industries, they’re located in Summit on Hwy. 158,

there’s one on Airport Road, Rhea-Smith Road, in Hollister on Ita Road,

near Simmons Farm on Thirteen Bridges Road and Mary Chapel and on the

old Hwy. 125.

The centers are for residential use only and accept yard waste,

appliances, old furniture, mattresses and up to four tires per visit.

They do not accept construction or demolition material, old batteries

or commercial waste.

The Waste Industries Transfer Station, on Hwy. 301 South, accepts

commercial and residential waste but no construction material, tires,

yard waste or appliances.

Grant said she hopes others will join her in cleaning up the

environment by using the recycle bins at the convenience centers. “I

like to encourage people to recycle,” she said.
