ROANOKE RAPIDS — The calendar turns from summer to fall today and brings the curtain down on the eighth hit season of Fridays in the Park.

But organizers are already looking ahead to the 2010 summer musical series with hopes for more free concerts and more support from the community.

The Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the city of Roanoke Rapids have joined forces with the help of the Halifax County Arts Council and a large group of sponsors to offer the free outdoor concerts each month from late spring to early autumn.

While by music industry standards the cost of the series may seem small — $5,000 plus annually — money is hard to raise in a struggling economy where keeping the red ink at bay is often difficult.

“This year was a big success,” said Halifax Eco-Tourism Heritage Manager Christina Gordon.

The concerts drew big crowds and offered a diversified musical repertoire — rock, jazz, country and beach.

Most of the musical groups are from the Roanoke Valley area or have local ties. “We have a large number of very talented local musical groups to perform,” Gordon said. Money concerns cut the number of concerts at Centennial Park from five to four, she explained.

Gordon is looking forward to the 2010 series with hopes for more sponsors and more concert dates. If you would like to participate in the program contact Gordon at 252-519-2603.
