William was born Aug. 18, 1947, in Enfield, to the late Preston and Mary Ellen Jones. William attended the public schools of Halifax County and graduated from Inborden High School. After completing his education, William enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country honorably for seven years, even serving in Vietnam. During his first tour he met and married the former Antonia A. Johnson. William and “Toni” were united in holy matrimony on Oct. 20, 1967, and with this union they were blessed with three wonderful children.

At an early age William accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and united with Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. William loved the Lord and his church. Even in failing health he would get to church early to open the doors for Sunday school and could often be found on his riding mower going to church to cut grass.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories his devoted and loving wife, Antonia A. Jones of the home; two daughters, Carolyn Diane Speller (Isaih) of Fredericksburg, Va., and Leslie Dionne Jones of Cary; two sons, William “Jay” Jones (Tina) of Raleigh and Cedric Omar Jones of Enfield; seven precious grandchildren, Cedric Bryant (Julie) of Lorton, Va., Chante Bryant and Kevyn Battle of Fredreicksburg, Karla Jones of Cary, Jaylin and Tiyana Jones of Raleigh and Armani Jones of Enfield; one great-granddaughter, Malia L. Bryant; two brothers, McDonald Jones (Mable) of Whitakers and Preston Jones Jr. (Gloria) of Enfield; two sisters, Ann G. Slade (Leon) of Rocky Mount and Annie B. Jones of Enfield; nine nephews, four nieces, 22 great-nephews and nieces and three great-great-nieces and nephew; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., today, Sept. 25, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Enfield, with the Rev. Jimmie Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield.

Clark Funeral Home in Enfield is handling the arrangements.
