ROANOKE RAPIDS — A catwalk collapsed at the KapStone Paper and

Packaging Corp. plant sending nine workers plummeting some 15 to 20

feet to the ground.

All but one of the injured are out of the hospital, according  to

emergency personnel.

Roanoke Rapids Fire Chief Gary Corbett said around 9 p.m. Saturday

while the plant was on shutdown an independent contractor was doing

work at the mill when the catwalk collapsed.

The nine workers, all on the contractor’s payroll, sustained injuries

ranging from cuts and bruises to broken bones. Seven of the injured

were home from the hospital before the weekend was over. An eighth

person was released Monday.  Corbett’s unit performed triage on the

victims, while Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad transported victims to

Halifax Regional Medical Center. One man was airlifted to Pitt Memorial

in Greenville.

A family member confirmed Steve Vick of Franklin Street is still

hospitalized suffering from extensive injuries. Vick is the brother of

Joyce Baird of Affordable Heating and Cooling. “He has to lay flat on

his back and they’re running MRIs today, but he can move his arms,” she

said.

Baird said doctors expect Vick to be in the hospital for weeks, and may

have to undergo several surgeries.

While giving assurances KapStone strives to uphold the highest safety

standards, Mill Communications Manager Kim Bracey said KapStone and the

contractors are investigating the cause of the accident and are working

to prevent this from ever happening again. She said the investigation

is in its preliminary stages and KapStone is working with the

contractors, the N.C. Department of Labor and OSHA to investigate the

matter.
