Eugene McCoy Massey Jr.

ROANOKE RAPIDS — Mr. Eugene McCoy Massey Jr., 49,  answered the call to Heaven on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, after a long battle with several medical conditions. He was a fighter to the very end who will no longer suffer.

He was born and raised in Halifax County and was an easy-going, fun-loving guy who loved to spend time with his family and hang out with his buddies. He was also an awesome cook.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carla Massey Jones; and an aunt, Alean Williams.

He is survived by is fiancée, Margaret Powers; his father, Eugene M. Massey Sr., and his mother, Shelby Jean Wheeler Massey; his daughters, Jena McKay Massey and Cassidy Leigh Massey; his sisters, Joanne Gilpin (Mark), Barbara Jones and Cindy Massey; a very special uncle, Billy Wheeler, all of Roanoke Rapids; his nieces and nephews, Chris (Beth) Moore, Shannon (Troy) Williams, Jessica Moore, Tammy (Kevin) Deberry, Brandon (Ginger) Duncan, Jack (Denise) Bryant, Ashelee Hester and Jenny Massey; many great-nieces and nephews; and special cousins, Mary, Trish, Cathy, Kenny and Julie.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Oct. 20, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements.

Funeral services will be held  at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21, in the chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. Wesley Agee officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eugene Massey Jr. Memorial Fund, c/o Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, P.O. Box 698, Roanoke Rapids NC 27870.
