Where was everyone?

I attended the Issues & Answers session at the theater Oct. 15. I am a 42-year-old woman and have been a resident of Roanoke Rapids for the past 19 1/2 years. I have to say I hoped we would have gotten more questions in but were restricted to only an hour. More disappointing though was the lack of attendance by this community. This event was mainly attended by senior members of the city which I am grateful for as these are the people who made the city what is it today, but where the heck were the 50 and under residents of the city? Shame on all of you for not having any interest in knowing who is serving in office and those who would like to be in those offices come this November. You are the people who will be voting and then complaining when things are not going the way you had hoped. I feel we should impose a new law which states people can not vote in their local elections if they do not attend at least five or more city meetings so they at least have some sense of what is happening in the community in which they reside. Maybe then we will have more trust and faith in the leaders we vote into these offices. With all respect and my prayers to all.

Editor’s note: We know all the questions were not asked and the audience had more. We renew our invitation to our readers to submit questions for us to use in our one-on-one interviews with the candidates. You may send your questions via e-mail to johnmoeur@rrdailyherald.com or to P.O. Box 520, Roanoke Rapids NC 27870.

Comments on series

I think the series on The Randy Parton Theatre has been very informative and well-written. I think this is the kind of thing that needs to be brought to the public’s attention. We certainly have a right to know how our leaders handled the opportunities and the problems which came to their table and what they did to get us into this mess and call all of us to pay more taxes for a very long time.

Tearing down?

I opened The Daily Herald this morning and saw a big piece of equipment sitting in front of The Randy Parton Theatre and I thought to myself, “What a relief. They are finally going to knock it down and the citizens of Roanoke Rapids will get some relief.”

Wolf?

I said a year ago, Barack Obama is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Now you can see what I meant. The wolf is slowly coming out.

" To the writer that wrote in calling Obama a wolf in sheep's clothing:

Do you realize the mess that Bush left this country in? He messed us over so deeply. We in the worst recession even thanks to the Republican Master George Bush.
So Clearly Obama has his work cut out for him. Bush was in house 8 years, so surely it will take way longer for our President Barack Obama to get us out his the Bush Campaign Failure. "

" Maybe a lot of Roanoke Rapids citizens were like me, I did not hear about the meeting at the theater until it was over. I don't think it was advertised very well.I wish you the best of luck in getting the voting laws changed. I have been a citizen of Roanoke Rapids for 30 years. When I vote , I am going to vote for anyone that has never held office in the city in any form.I am not going to vote for anyone that I voted for in the last election. I know a lot of people who feel the same way. God Bless "

" Where were we? well, if you really care to know. Working. My city taxes have gone up so much, along with all my other taxes that I now cannot take time off to attend city meetings or the event you mentioned. Yup, working.. to pay for everyone else's free loading off of a corrupt medicaid/medicare system, bad city decisions, etc. "

" Then you must be the wolf that has been hiding, you must not watch the news or see the things he has to deal with with all the issues on his plate. Wake up! Put your trust in God not man! "

" Thanks to the Herald for hosting the forum last week and for the series of articles on the theater debt. The more I read and learn the more confused I get, so please don't stop until the entire story has been told. One thing that I noticed from the articles so far that really confuses me. The Herald quoted Councilman Jon Baker as saying that city council was "misled" by the state and that given a second chance to do things differently, he wouldn't trust the state officials. Then on Sunday, the Herald posted a memo from the state that seems to be warning city officials to be very careful moving forward with a deal with Randy Parton. The memo even recommmends making sure the debt payment is made BEFORE Mr. Parton gets paid. Did Jon Baker not see this memo, or has he conveniently forgotten that the state tried to help protect the citizens? Please followup on this, the taxpayers need an answer before the election on November 3. "

" I agree that Obama is a wolf in sheep's clothing. I don't think the wolf is coming out slow, seems to me he is coming out fast. Just remember he promised change and he sure kept that promise. "
