Dorothy Bridgers Powell

WOODLAND — Mrs. Dorothy Bridgers Powell, 93, died  Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at the Guardian Care Nursing Home in Ahoskie.

Mrs. Powell was a native of Northampton County. She was married to William Cecil Powell in 1936 and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Mrs. Powell was very active in Woodland United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and choir member. She was the leader of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and was a lifetime member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, now known as the UMW.  She was a member of the Woodland Civic Club. Mrs. Powell was the board of elections registrar for the town of Woodland for several years.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mrs. Powell was loved and cherished by her entire family. She has been an inspiration to her family and all that knew her throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Dena Askew Bridgers and Clater Bridgers; her husband, William Cecil Powell; her son, William Keith Powell; and three brothers, Eston, Howard and J.T. Bridgers.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda P. Howell and her husband, Bill, of Kitty Hawk and Jean P. Bryant and her husband, Edward, of Woodland; one sister, Elsie B. Thomas of Portsmouth, Va.; three grandchildren, Jeff Howell, Mike Howell and Lynn H. Rowell; five great-grandchildren, Brandon Howell, Zach Howell, Hunter Howell, Ellie Howell and Eryn Graves; one great-great-grandchild, Brady Howell; along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Nov. 3, at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, which is handling the arrangements.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Woodland United Methodist Church in Woodland, with the Rev. Ed Drew officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Woodland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodland United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1612 Doolittle Mill Road, Conway NC 27820.
