WELDON — The fumble recovery by Joseph McGee on the 33-yard line with five minutes remaining in the fourth leading to the go ahead touchdown was the break of the game for Weldon as they were able to hold on for a,14-6, victory over North Edgecombe to stay unbeaten in the Tar-Roanoke conference.

After 24 minutes of great football played, the first half ended with goose eggs on the score board as neither squad was able to break the plane, even with the Chargers getting into the redzone.

North Edgecombe Head Coach Danny Ward took a play from Grady Williams play book as his Warriors marched down field by running right down the middle of it to get within striking distance of the endzone. But two penalties and a stuffed fourth down conversion on fourth and nine gave Weldon the ball with just 6:23 left in the quarter.

Weldon did what they do best and that’s run, run, run the ball with McGee and Chris Lynch on the carries.

However, the Chargers finished out the quarter and traded ends for the second but was not able to score. Both squads tried but came up short to have a quick and scoreless first half. The tide began to change at the beginning of the second half when Lynch had a big kickoff return that put his Chargers in great field position.

After establishing a running game, Weldon went to the air with a 25- yard connection from Cameron Staten to Nehemiah Pulley at the 8:33 mark in the third. The Chargers had a 6-0 lead after the two point conversion attempt was stopped.

Weldon’s defense created at brickwall when they went to work to keep the Warriors offensive efforts in check, keeping Northed Egcombe scoreless for three quarters.

The Warriors evened the score in the beginning of the fourth when Johnnte Ward broke for a 55-yard touchdown run on third and nine with 10:04 left in the game.

On Weldon’s next possession they went three and out and had to punt for the first time in the game with 6:23 remaining. North Edgecombe was moving down field and chewing up the clock when McGee fell on the ball for a recovery after it was coughed up by a Warrior running back. Playing both sides of the ball McGee then switched gears and broke for a huge run that put the Chargers inside the 10. Lynch carried on the next play to put the ball on the four-yard line and McGee finished what he started by getting the touchdown and the conversion points to what became the winning score.

McGee had 15 carries for 158 yards and the defense did what they had to do with Jousha Jenkins leading the charge with 17 tackles.

“We got about as lucky as a team could get, the fumble recovery made all the difference in the world,” Williams said after the game. “We beat a good team tonight. North Edgecombe played about as hard as a team could play, fortunately we were able to come out the winner.”

Notes: Weldon improves to 7-1, 4-0 with two games remaining. The Chargers travel to Southeast Halifax this Friday.
