ROANOKE RAPIDS — Enfield Middle School is one game away from a perfect season and Chaloner became the latest victim on the Panthers path of destruction Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers started out slow, but picked up the pace in the second half as they defeated the Yellow Jackets, 28-0.

Enfield got scores from Jaquez McDaniel and Tay Pittman in the first half to build a, 14-0, lead at the break. Even though the defense held Chaloner scoreless, the offense looked sluggish in the opening 16 minutes of play.

“We started out a little slow,” Panthers Head coach Duriel Smith said. “But then we got the intensity back and played good Panther football. The defense was sound today. We flowed to the ball well. We were led by a 7th grader (McDaniel) who is just tenacious around the football.”

Pittman recovered a fumble on the Yellow Jackets opening possession of the third quarter and a big gain through the air from Adonis Whitaker to Dee Scarver set up a 15-yard run by Pittman to make the score, 20-0, in favor of the Panthers. Early in the fourth quarter Enfield recovered another Chaloner fumble on the 50-yard line and a few plays later McDaniel took it in from 42-yards out. Whitaker added the conversion run and sealed the victory.

The victory gives Enfield added momentum headed to their final contest of the season next week when they host William R. Davie in the ‘King of the County’ game — the middle school version.

“We are the only two Halifax County middle schools,” Smith said. “It’s a good thing for the kids to bring the community together. The high schools do it so why shouldn’t we?”

The Panthers will host the Vikings at 6 p.m. at Southeast Halifax High School.
