“I really was surprised,” Lawson said of the voting disparity. “I figured it would be close. I had no clue.” The actual vote total gave Lawson a 1,165-449 edge.
Lawson knows election night is only the first step in his new leadership role and there’s some learning to do. “I think the first thing is the new mayor and we need to get up to speed,” Lawson says. The new council, Lawson stated, must learn where they are “with operating expenses” in the city and they must get a handle on the city’s financial situation.
“We need to start working hard on getting a hold of our city’s financial situation,” Lawson asserts. “And as the economy improves, start working on getting services back.”
“We’re in a pinch,” Lawson admits. “And there are a lot of tough decisions that have to be made. We have to re-establish trust with the taxpayers because that’s who we work for.”
Lawson looks forward to the challenge ahead. “There will be good times,” he says, “And some tough challenges. I’m honored by the support shown to me.”
Lawson had some kind words for Baker. “I appreciate the way he handled his campaign,” Lawson says, “He was very honorable in (sticking to the issues).”
Outgoing Councilman Baker passed his well wishes on to his replacement. “Congratulations to Greg,” Baker said, “He ran a good campaign. I wish him well.”
Lawson takes office as new Councilman for District 2 at the next City Council regular meeting, currently scheduled for Dec. 8.
