Chick worked part time at Love’s Hardware Store in Washington, D.C., throughout high school and college. He enjoyed working there and became well acquainted with many co-workers and customers.
Upon graduating from college, Chick worked for two years in the Halifax County School System. He then moved to Emporia and began his long career in Greensville County School System, where his friends and co-workers referred to him as “Taylor” or “Mr. Taylor.” Although he was considered a disciplinarian, he truly enjoyed working at Belfield Elementary and E.W. Wyatt Middle Schools. After teaching for 30 years, Chick retired in June 1998. “Retired “ was only a word to him, since he then began to teach night school and GED classes. He was excited about the success of his GED students at the Southside Community College and also those at the prison. He continued his work with them up to two days before his death.
Chick leaves to cherish his memories two sisters, Velma Taylor of Washington, D.C., and Carolyn Taylor of Arlington, Va.; one brother, Donald Taylor of Halifax; one niece, Myesha Taylor of Arlington; three aunts, Frankie Young of Halifax, Ertie Barnes of Mitchell, Md., and Florence Cooke of Washington, D.C.; along with a host of cousins, friends and co-workers.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, at Greensville Elementary School, 1101 Sussex Drive, Emporia VA 23847, with the Rev. Colonius Avent officiating.
