Captain L.J. Burch of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said “Operation Burnout,” started in the early part of 2007 and targeted the larger drug dealers in the county. “We got a lot of complaints that we were always arresting the same people. This operation targeted the sources,” said Burch.
“The sheriff has committed himself to taking out the larger drug dealers,” said Burch describing the operation. “These are not street corner dealers. We’re eliminating the sources.”
Burch said the office has five men working with the FBI in Operation Burnout and much of the information leading to arrests were provided by patrols.
An FBI news release said Patterson recently was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James Dever III to 132 months in federal prison.
Burch said Patterson is a real “bad guy,” even though he had no previous record. The investigation showed Patterson had been distributing cocaine and crack as early as 2003.
He was arrested for obtaining and/or distributing about 240 grams of crack and more than three kilograms of cocaine. He was caught selling almost 55 grams of crack on two separate occasions, for around $2,000 each time.
When arrested a few weeks later, Patterson had a loaded .45 caliber handgun and nearly $3,500 cash on him. He pled guilty July 6 to distributing 50 grams or more of crack cocaine.
“You can tell by the amounts he was moving he was a major source in this area.” said Burch. He also said Patterson is a good example of the kind of arrests made in this operation.
US. Attorney George E.B. Holding said, “The investigators assigned to this OCDETF (Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force) case have done a tremendous job and we are grateful for their hard work in removing drug traffickers from the Halifax County community. We know there is more work to be done, and we intend on continuing to partner with these agencies in our efforts to dismantle the drug distribution network operating in and around Halifax County.”
