Roanoke Rapids Police Capt. Andy Jackson told The Daily Herald officers responded to a call of a man being carjacked at the Center on Jackson Street just after 3:30 p.m.

Jackson said the suspect grabbed a man from behind in the parking lot, threw him to the ground, took his wallet, then fled the scene in the victim’s car.

The 2008 Nissan Sentra was found on the 600 block of Monroe Street. The victim’s wallet was on the seat of the vehicle with $200 missing.

Police searched the vicinity, however were not able to locate the suspect.

The 74-year old victim, who is a member of the Citizens on Patrol program with the Roanoke Rapids Police Department and a former corrections worker at an out-of-state facility, was not injured.

Jackson described the suspect as a young black male of average height dressed in a multi-colored coat, dark jeans and dark ball cap.
