A witness told police the suspect was wearing black classic Reebok shoes and spoke with a “Northern accent.” Roanoke Rapids Police Capt. Andy Jackson described the suspect as a black male about 6 foot, 2 inches tall, approximately 155 pounds, wearing dark pants, dark coat and a light colored hooded shirt.

Jackson said the New Republic Bank, located at Becker Drive and Old Farm Road, was held up at gunpoint Thursday shortly after 3 p.m., when the suspect walked into the bank with a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money.

The robber walked out of the bank with several thousand dollars, fled on foot and was last seen near Quail Court Apartments.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was called in on the case as part of the protocol local police are required to follow when a weapon is involved in a bank robbery.

If you have any information which can help police in this investigation, you are urged to call the Roanoke Rapids Police Department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
