Newly elected mayor and Town Commissioner Betty Willis, who spearheaded the grant, was thrilled when she heard the news. “You have made my day!” she said. Willis said the town has been working on finding funds to update the old Owen’s Electric building to be used for the town hall. The move will provide more room for town gatherings, office space and provide handicap access.
Willis said the town has functioned at it’s current site at 117 E. South Main for more than 40 years. Before that the building was the firehouse. “It’s as old as dirt,” Willis said with a laugh. She thought back, trying to remember who worked in the office and when the new firehouse was built. “I’m not that good at town trivia,” she said then laughed again. “It’s been a big part of the town for more than 60 years.”
As operations grew the building became too small to accommodate the police department and town hall. It couldn’t facilitate meetings and when it served as a polling station for voters, things can get really tight. “This couldn’t have come at a better time. We’re in dire need. We thank Congressman Butterfield for all his work.”
Willis said the town has all the plans, scopes and evaluations ready and work on the town hall should commence shortly. She hopes the work will be put out for bid very soon.
Willis said the old town hall will be completely renovated and up-fit to house only the police department. The town plans to petition the county for a magistrate as well. Police Chief Mike Suggs said in an earlier interview he’s looking forward to that day. With expansions in his department, he needs the room.
Willis said, “We are thrilled to death. We desperately need this.”
