Madison Square Garden and Caesar’s Palace are famous for holding some of the most historic bouts in boxing history, such as the Thomas Hearns-Ian Barkley matches.

Boxers throughout North Carolina and Virginia will pile into Roanoke Rapids as the newly managed theater will transform into such a venue for boxing fans.

Roy Edmonds, owner of Jasard’s, said, “I thought we were successful last time. We had about 250 people on the night. The theater also had something going on that night so hopefully we will have a bigger crowd.”

A total of 22 bouts will be on the card starting with the women traveling from Winston-Salem and Wilson to step into the ring in the 202 class.

The boxers from the club range from 12-year-old Jarius Bynum fighting in the 102 class, to Malatka Brooks in the heavy weight division.  Kenneth Young will fight in the middleweight class and Desean Hendricks fighting in the lightweight class at the age of 17. Bynum will step into the square circle for just the fifth time in one year of boxing. The youngster has already collected a title as he won the Silver gloves champion honors at the regional, which included five states. “I like boxing, but sometimes you step into the ring and can get kind of scared, but I just jump around trying to shake off the nerves,” said Bynum. “You really have to concentrate when you face someone who is stronger to see how he moves to figure out a weakness to defeat him.”

“It’s all about the young men and women of the community,” says Edmonds who had a 25 bout five year stint as a pro. “I want people to understand it’s more than boxing we are teaching. We are trying to get a young person to feel good about themselves and that leads to a positive adult.”

The adrenaline rush is beginning to feel the gym as the boxers began their final preparations for the upcoming show Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
