ROANOKE RAPIDS — In just his sophomore year of coaching Rodney Robertson finds himself at the helm as the new Head Coach of the varsity boys basketball team at Halifax Academy.

Robertson coached the jayvee squad last season, plus aided on the sideline for the varsity. “It is good to be able to come back and coach at my old school, I have kids that go here,” said Robertson, a former player and 1990 graduate of Halifax Academy.

“Sometimes I feel like I’m still playing, I get just as pumped for a game as the players do.”

The transition was really not that hard from jayvee to varsity. Most of his current varsity team is full of players he coached last season. Only Matthew Parrish and Clay Rightmeyer returned for another exciting year of Viking basketball.

“Having players who are familiar with your coaching style is good, but right now inexperience on the floor is hurting us just a little,” said Robertson

Inexperience was credited to a heartbreaking last second buzzer loss against rival Northeast Academy Tuesday night. “You know my guys play with heart and I like that, they never gave up by fighting back,” Robertson said. “Anytime you see guys with tears in their eyes ... that showed me something. I have guys that take it seriously, I can work with that.”

With just a few things to work on and getting players more time on the hardwood Robertson is looking forward to a good, successful season as head coach.
