ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Raising money for underprivileged children in the community is the meaning behind the Turkey Bowl.

On left, practice continues for, from left, Jayme Shellburn, Ricky Dickens and Craig Jeans. The trio will play on the Roanoke Rapids City squad in the annual Turkey Bowl. The game takes place tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 28, kickoff is 6:30 p.m. at Roanoke Rapids High School. The event offers bragging rights to the winners, but Valley youngsters will benefit from donations made at the game by helping children who would not otherwise have a Christmas. For no other reason than to bring smiles upon the faces of children who may not otherwise have a Christmas. Grown men will step onto the gridiron at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 to play.

The Turkey Bowl has been an annual event for the last six years between the Roanoke Rapids Fire and Police departments. However, this is the first time Halifax County has gotten involved.  It all came about when the County fellows would go and support the police from just working with them on a day-to-day basis. They were asked to participate when the numbers began to dwindle.

But to think for a minute it is just a game think again, “ We have about 22 guys who will play Saturday cause we want to win,” said Halifax Sheriff’s Office Lt. Chuck Hasty.

Though it is fun for a great cause, but bragging rights are on the line.

Said Hasty, “I just wanted to thank all of the local business’s for getting on board with the donations of door prizes and the sponsoring the event.”
