ROANOKE RAPIDS — The Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jackets girls basketball got off to a sluggish start, then had to hold off a feisty Halifax Academy team in their victory, 43-33. Making their first appearance since the Kiwanis Women’s Basketball Tip-off Tournament, both teams looked like they had to shake off the turkey, playing in their first game after the Thanksgiving break.

The local rivals combine for just 13 first quarter points, but picked up the action in the second quarter. Tiana Squire, Leslie Stallings, Ariel Potter and Veronica Edmonds scored to give Roanoke Rapids a, 21-14, lead. Halifax Academy’s Haley Wood stopped the bleeding with a free throw and the Vikings trailed, 21-15, at the break. The Yellow Jackets managed to keep Halifax Academy at bay for most of the second half, but the Lady Vikings managed to make a push in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.

The Vikings scored back-to-back lay-ups to pull to within six, but Stallings countered with a bucket to give Roanoke Rapids an eight-point lead. Smith answered back with a jumper, answered by Edmonds with a lay-up at the other end. Things got really interesting when Wood hit one free throw to make it a three-point game, 36-33, with less than five minutes remaining.

Stallings then took over in the post for Roanoke Rapids.

The senior center hit a jumper in the middle of the lane, then made one of two free throws to put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 39-33. Brittany Shearin scored a bucket close to the basket and Roanoke Rapids held the Vikings off the rest of the way.

Stallings lead the Yellow Jackets with 14 points while Shearin added 10. Smith led Halifax Academy with 10 points. The Lady Jackets return to action today when they host Tarboro High School. The Roanoke Rapids jayvee girls team will make their debut tonight at 6 p.m.

Notes: The Roanoke Rapids jayvee team defeated Halifax Academy, 61-47. Shelton Belfield led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 12 points. Clay Lockamon added 9 while Stephen Vassor finished with 8. Josh Thaxton scored 17 for the Vikings.
