Zachrious Lee Jr., 29, of Roanoke Rapids, was in Superior Court Tuesday on unrelated charges. After Judge Alma Hinton revoked Lee’s probation, officers were taking him into custody, when he ran from the courtroom.

According to Officer Scott Hall and Lt. Bobby Martin, of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, officers ordered Lee to stop and tried to detain him, but he made it to his car.

“Once in the vehicle, Mr. Lee backed up nearly hitting one officer and fled,” said Martin. Lee took off toward Garysburg on Highway 301, but Martin and Agent Anzell Harris were in pursuit.

N.C. Highway Patrol, Northampton County Sheriff’s Office and the Weldon Police Department were put on alert and a trap was set. “When Mr. Lee got near Basnights on Highway 301 near Weldon, Troopers M.D. Adair and B. Myers had stop sticks deployed and successfully hit Mr. Lee's left rear tire,” said Martin.

Lee proceeded north on Highway 301 with his tire going flat, Martin stated and continued, Lee entered Northampton County and went through Garysburg. The vehicle finally stopped at Turners Store, Lee lost his tire.

“He was arrested without further incident,” said Hall.

A bailiff received minor injuries and was hospitalized in the scuffle.

Lee faces new charges of simple assault, two counts of resisting a public officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, flee to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger and speeding.

“The Halifax County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance in apprehending this subject: Highway Patrol, Weldon Police Department, Northampton County Sheriff's Office and the Garysburg Police Department. With the help of these agencies, Mr. Lee was caught without any injuries to anyone,” said Martin.

Lee is in the Halifax County Detention Center with no bond.
