Julian W. Rives

ENFIELD — Julian W. Rives, 88, of 309 McGwigan St., Enfield, died late Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at his home.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and for many years was an agent with Nationwide Insurance. He will always be remembered for his love of his azaleas and his garden.

Mr. Rives was born Aug. 14, 1921, in Halifax County, the son of the late John Baker Rives and Mary Keel Rives. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Alice Davis Rives; his sisters, Clara Dell Rives, Mary Lousie Rives Williams, Esther Rives Painter, his twin, Julia Rives Hartenstine, Sarah Leigh Rives, Rebecca Rives Bethea and Lynette Rives Anderson; and his brother, James Redden Rives.

His survivors include one daughter, Julia R. Hoverman, of Jacksonville; two sons, Timothy D. Rives, of Southmont, and John W. and Linda Rives, of Durham; one sister, Vivia Rives Creech, of Smithfield; five grandchildren; and 19 nephews and nieces.

Special thanks to his caregivers, Diane Barnes, Deloris Epps, Mozella Perry and the Hospice of Nash General.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Friday Jan. 22, at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, which is handling the arrangements.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 23, at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, with nephews, Ron Williams and Sam Williams, officiating.
