WELDON — The spring 2010 enrollment at Halifax Community College of 1,730 is the largest spring enrollment in the history of the school, President Ervin Griffin Sr. told the Board of Trustees during their monthly meeting Tuesday.

“From the records provided by our excellent registrar, Dawn Veliky, the closest number to our 1,730 this semester was during the spring 2003 with 1,657 students,” he said.

This enrollment increase represents a 20 percent increase over the spring 2009 enrollment of 1,447 students.

“It is also important to note this is the year that our Spring enrollment of curriculum students have exceeded our fall enrollments,” Griffin said.

A goal of 1,600 students was set for this spring semester. Griffin thanked Dean Hasty and all the college personnel for working the enrollment and retention management plan.

He gave the trustees a breakdown of the enrollment numbers.

Seventy-five percent are from Halifax County with 18 percent from Northampton County and seven percent from North Carolina and out of state.

There were 1,121 females and 609 males. Seventy-five percent of the students enrolled were ages 18 to 35 with the other 25 percent ages 36 or older.

Seventy-two percent or 1,248 students are enrolled in the associate degree program. With 20 percent or 339 enrolled in the diploma and certificate program. The remaining eight percent are high school students enrolled in the Dual, Huskins or Early College programs.

Griffin noted one of the most important statistical categories that tells us about the makeup of the student body is the breakdown by status. The first time students, who started the term listed as Fall 2009, is 13 percent. The transfer students with first term as Fall 2009 is six percent. But 81 percent were returning students who had attended a term or terms prior to Fall 2009.

“This says a lot when 81 percent are returning,” Griffin said. “I am very appreciative of the staff and leadership in place. Sometimes, it is overlooked as to what we do to retain our students.”

Other issues he updated the board about included:

• The college was reviewed by North Carolina State Approving Agency for Veterans Affairs. “We received a good report as usual from the agency,” Griffin said.  The college has been certified through 2011.

• Human Resources verification report indicated that 357 staff are working at the college.

• HCC signed another articulation notice that the University of North Carolina at Greensboro offer the continuation of 2Plus for AAS degree graduate in specific programs.
