The deadline for nominations is Friday, Feb. 5, by mail or online submission at the HCC website, www.halifaxcc.edu (click on the Saluting Our Local African American Heroes icon).

Recognition of the heroes will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at noon in The Centre.

Up to five people will be selected for the award and honored during the event, which will recognize regular, hard-working individuals.

A nominee does not have to be “high profile” in order to be honored.

Along with this basic information, the nomination must include a short essay that addresses each of four qualities used as the selection criteria:

• Commitment and contributions to the community

• Unselfish devotion to others

• Initiative, innovation and leadership in the region

• Willingness to share time and wisdom through service to the community and its citizens

The narrative should expand and focus on specific examples that demonstrate the nominee’s commitment and unique contributions to the Roanoke Valley. Any citizen of the African-American community is eligible to be considered for this nomination.

For more details or a nomination form, call 252-538-4319 or e-mail templem@halifaxcc.edu.
