Charter

I wish our new mayor would do something about Charter (Communications).

Middle school let down?

I just have one question — What in the world is going on at Weldon Middle School? As parents, we have been let down.

Poor treatment

In response to the “passionate teacher comment” ... Maybe teachers would be more passionate if they were treated as professionals rather than prisoners in the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.

Pride in chamber

The Roanoke Valley should be proud of the Chamber of Commerce and its president and CEO Allen Purser. He is visible in the community and always eager to discuss any topic with enthusiasm. We are fortunate he chose Roanoke Rapids to live and work.

" I have read the comments that have been said about the "schooling issue" and I all I can say is wow. My family and I have recently moved into this area and upon investigations of the schools and school districts, I have decided NOT to let my children attend any school in this area.
Just as an opinion of a "newcomer" I must say that the academic cirriculum in this area is appaling and I would believe that "PARENTS" should be UPSET and demand BETTER cirriculum for our children. If anything as a society I hear "what's happened" or "where did we go wrong with our children". As a whole we should accept responsibility, come to a conclusion, and change the direction that OUR CHILDREN sre heading in.
Let me be really honest here, Since being here I have had to adapt to this way of life. People are not welcoming and as part of the southern heritage where did "hospitality" go? Where did manners go? Why is everything in this area just based on RACE? Isn't segregation over with?
I choose not to let my children go to this school system because of the ignorance. This place is so BEAUTIFUL and filled with history yet adults in this area act so rude and ugly which is totally opposite of what this place should be.
So until us "grown" adults get our act together our CHILDREN will continuosly follow in our footsteps, thus making this issue really " US PARENTS" FAULT.
You can find blame in anyone and you can point a finger at anyone but what good is that going to do? Untill you take a step back, look at all the circumstances, and realize that you as a PARENT have contributed to the problem whether it be your child "mocking" what he/she see's at home,a child "imitating" how they are spoken to at home, or even taking the stress of how hurt these kids are at their surroundings out on their teachers. It is our FAULT.
There is no reason these children are not recieving a good education, so rise up ROANOKE RAPIDS accept responsibility for your PART in what's going on and let's get together FOR OUR CHILDREN SAKES and FIGHT FOR THEIR FUTURES!!! WOW "

" you know, im really amazed at how adults can get so worked up over how bad the school is run! you guys bicker like children! i am 16 years old, and i am a student at east myself and personally, i'm tired of what i'm seeing. i'm not just saying this because i'm a student, i really am tired. we have had 5 fights at our school in a mere 2 days. and nothing was done that was supposed to be. the students got LESS than punishment. something needs to be done. " In response to Weldon Middle School.

All of the talk comes from the principal putting 3 students off of the basketball team. Let be for real...is sports so important that it takes the place of good conduct and good grades. Please keep it real. This school along with many others are suffering because of crap like this. Put the emphasis on students learning. So what your child is a so-called honor student. Most of the children in this area are not true honor students. Their grades are given to them.

No, I don't have a child at the school, but as long as my tax dollars fund that school and pay the salaries of the people that work at that school...it is my biggest concern. Your voice is no greater than mine or the next. "

" In response to "Think", the only lack of support that is at East is by its own administrator. I agree with "Proud Parent", the "good administrator" had to leave. Wander why? Did someone feel threatened by her knowledge and understanding of her staff, parents, and community? It's time for a change! What's done in the dark will come to light. Unethical practices, unprofessionalism is showing its ugly face. When will the change come? "

" IN a response to the Weldon Middle School comment I did'nt write the poor treatment comment but I totally agree with it.The principal is not fair and he only listens to what the teachers have to say and not the students.Yes the school has my contact information,I attend school functions and I know all my child teachers. My child is an honor student there and my first concern is education but I also want equality for my child and for the person that wrote the comment and don't have a child there it really is none of your concern. "

" I do not mind being held to a high standard. However, I do not have to be disrespected, looked down upon, made to feel that my concerns are not important, nor lied to or lied about by the very people who should exmplify professionalism. I do agree that it has been a lack of support at East. "

Think wrote on Feb 3, 2010 9:31 PM:

" Lack of support for the administrators at East has been there for so many years. I am glad my daughter can go to school and learn something now. No more gambling in the classroom with the teacher, like it was when my son went there. Students were teaching the advanced math classes because the teacher didn't know the content. East isnt in the newspaper for bad stuff like it was years ago, I guess those people arent happy with the school actually holding ALL people to high standards. How can one school with fewer kids have three administrators and East only have two? How can a school district leader comes to a East/West game and sits with one school for THREE straight games (JV, V and girls) basketball game and never goes over to the other side and speak to the parents or students, what is that telling you? Enough people.. get outta your self-righteous shells and GROW UP. "

Miss Dedicated to Change wrote on Feb 2, 2010 11:27 AM:

" In response to the parent that posted "we have been let down" at Weldon Middle School...I wonder why?
My theory is that you have been let down again by thinking that you have another sub-par leader in place that will take whatever lame excuses you present for your child not being able to do what he/she wants to do. The instructional leader at WMS has worked tirelesly over the past few years to reform and transform a school that was stagnant in making academic progress. You should be grateful that this man cared enough about your child's academic endeavors to work day in and day out to help ALL children be successful. You are probably mad at the way he does not listen to mediocrity or give in to the social politics around him. I admire his character and the fact that he is not a coward for educational equality like some of his forerunners. Take some time to go speak with your child's teachers and the principal and find out what you really need to know...not what your friends say! I will be glad to see the day when Weldon City Schools really ask the question "How are the children?" Isn't this what the BOE chairs always says? It is not about adults! "

A Concerned Citizen wrote on Feb 2, 2010 11:18 AM:

" Im not a parent of a student of Weldon Middle School, but I have several QUESTIONS for the "Let Down Parent". 1.) Do you attend PTA meeting on a regular basis?
2.) Do you even know your child(ren) teachers?
3.) Does the school have all of the correct contact information to reach you about school activities?

If you can not anwser ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS with a YES. Then maybe you are letting Weldon Middle School down. "

Concern Citizen wrote on Feb 1, 2010 5:10 PM:

" I am a Concerned citizen who drove by a house on the corner of 9th and rapids. The person who lives there has a sign in their yard slandering the city manager. In capital letters it reads SABASTION ..treat all citizens the same or go back where you came from ! I am appalled by the way this individual is allowed to post something so negative with the looks of his property. This issue should be addressed accordingly. Our City Manager deserves more respect. Please Publish this or at least drive by and look at the sign. "

If your child attends this school or if you simply live in the district, you should ask the Superintendent, not the newspaper publisher! "

Once upon a time, teachers and principals were trusted and respected by others. Please stop the unethical practices that are taking place in this school. "

" Prisoners.... Being able to go off campus is not a guarantee in any teacher's contract. They are paid for a lunch which, unless they are getting their lunch from the drive thru and eating it while they are on the run, they cannot eat during the allowed time. The rest of the time they are paid to plan and that cannot be done in line at the grocery store, the nail shop, at their house watching Young and the Restless or whatever. If they want a 2 hr lunch hour then they need to open their own business and see how that goes. Maybe open their own school and see how well they can manage it away from the school. "
