Charter
I wish our new mayor would do something about Charter (Communications).
Middle school let down?
I just have one question — What in the world is going on at Weldon Middle School? As parents, we have been let down.
Poor treatment
In response to the “passionate teacher comment” ... Maybe teachers would be more passionate if they were treated as professionals rather than prisoners in the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.
Pride in chamber
The Roanoke Valley should be proud of the Chamber of Commerce and its president and CEO Allen Purser. He is visible in the community and always eager to discuss any topic with enthusiasm. We are fortunate he chose Roanoke Rapids to live and work.

Just as an opinion of a "newcomer" I must say that the academic cirriculum in this area is appaling and I would believe that "PARENTS" should be UPSET and demand BETTER cirriculum for our children. If anything as a society I hear "what's happened" or "where did we go wrong with our children". As a whole we should accept responsibility, come to a conclusion, and change the direction that OUR CHILDREN sre heading in.
Let me be really honest here, Since being here I have had to adapt to this way of life. People are not welcoming and as part of the southern heritage where did "hospitality" go? Where did manners go? Why is everything in this area just based on RACE? Isn't segregation over with?
I choose not to let my children go to this school system because of the ignorance. This place is so BEAUTIFUL and filled with history yet adults in this area act so rude and ugly which is totally opposite of what this place should be.
So until us "grown" adults get our act together our CHILDREN will continuosly follow in our footsteps, thus making this issue really " US PARENTS" FAULT.
You can find blame in anyone and you can point a finger at anyone but what good is that going to do? Untill you take a step back, look at all the circumstances, and realize that you as a PARENT have contributed to the problem whether it be your child "mocking" what he/she see's at home,a child "imitating" how they are spoken to at home, or even taking the stress of how hurt these kids are at their surroundings out on their teachers. It is our FAULT.
There is no reason these children are not recieving a good education, so rise up ROANOKE RAPIDS accept responsibility for your PART in what's going on and let's get together FOR OUR CHILDREN SAKES and FIGHT FOR THEIR FUTURES!!! WOW "

All of the talk comes from the principal putting 3 students off of the basketball team. Let be for real...is sports so important that it takes the place of good conduct and good grades. Please keep it real. This school along with many others are suffering because of crap like this. Put the emphasis on students learning. So what your child is a so-called honor student. Most of the children in this area are not true honor students. Their grades are given to them.
No, I don't have a child at the school, but as long as my tax dollars fund that school and pay the salaries of the people that work at that school...it is my biggest concern. Your voice is no greater than mine or the next. "

My theory is that you have been let down again by thinking that you have another sub-par leader in place that will take whatever lame excuses you present for your child not being able to do what he/she wants to do. The instructional leader at WMS has worked tirelesly over the past few years to reform and transform a school that was stagnant in making academic progress. You should be grateful that this man cared enough about your child's academic endeavors to work day in and day out to help ALL children be successful. You are probably mad at the way he does not listen to mediocrity or give in to the social politics around him. I admire his character and the fact that he is not a coward for educational equality like some of his forerunners. Take some time to go speak with your child's teachers and the principal and find out what you really need to know...not what your friends say! I will be glad to see the day when Weldon City Schools really ask the question "How are the children?" Isn't this what the BOE chairs always says? It is not about adults! "

2.) Do you even know your child(ren) teachers?
3.) Does the school have all of the correct contact information to reach you about school activities?
If you can not anwser ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS with a YES. Then maybe you are letting Weldon Middle School down. "

If your child attends this school or if you simply live in the district, you should ask the Superintendent, not the newspaper publisher! "
