The third annual “Saluting Our Local African-American Heroes” program will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at noon in The Centre.

Friends and family members of the heroes are invited and the event is free and open to the public. A lunch reception will follow the program.

Dr. Ervin Griffin Sr. said, “Twenty-nine nominations were received for the community heroes and eight for the student heroes. These awards are meant to recognize regular, hard-working individuals. Nominees do not have to be ‘high profile’ in order to be honored.”

The community heroes are Kenneth Harris, cosmetology department head at HCC; the Rev. Quientrell L. Burrell Jr., pastor of First Baptist Church of Weldon; Doris N. Mack, executive director at System of Care — Families Supporting Families; Audrey Hardy, surgical unit nurse manager at Halifax Regional Medical Center; Delores Amason, retired HCC dean of student services and enrollment management: and the late Lee Amason, a volunteer firefighter with the Tillery Fire Department.

The student heroes are David Lasky, a HCC student and PReparing men for Intellectual, acaDemic, and Educational success (P.R.I.D.E.) assistant learning coach, and Theresa Raymond a HCC student, SGA president and counseling center office assistant.

A nomination process was used and selections were made based on qualities such as community contributions, unselfish devotion to others, leadership in the region and willingness to share time and knowledge in service to others. Grade point average was also considered for student nominees.
