Sgt. Doug Pilgreen, of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, said Melissa Kaye Reese, 40, Weldon, was arrested July 20 for eight counts of forgery, eight counts of uttering (signing a check and presenting it for money knowing the check is false), three counts of obtaining property by false pretense, two counts of identity theft, one count of misdemeanor larceny and one count of possession of stolen property.

According to Pilgreen, the victim reported to Deputy Justin Mathews someone had stolen some checks and they were cashed in numerous places in the area. Matthews investigated the incident which led him to Reese.

She was arrested without incident and placed under a $15,000 bond and is due in court Aug. 18.

In an ongoing case, Roanoke Rapids man Walter Harvey Jr. faces more charges. He has been charged with seven counts of obtaining property by false pretense in June for allegedly not performing work he was paid to do on people’s vehicles.

Pilgreen stated two other victims are saying Harvey was paid in advance to repair their vehicles and he never performed the work. Both victims said they didn’t even get their vehicles back. These incidents took place in October, 2009, and March.

Harvey was placed under a $5,000 bond and is due in court Sept. 15.
