Mark your calendar for Sept. 18 starting at 10 a.m.

Tickets are on sale now at the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce office, Halifax-Warren Smart Start and The Daily Herald, and you can adopt a duck for $5 each. Six quacks are $25 and a flock (25) is $100.

At 2 p.m. rubber duckies will pile out into the Roanoke River and will race to the finish line, with a little help from the river current. Top prize is $1,000 with $500 and $250 prizes, as well.

Sonya Speed, event coordinator, said she’s working hard to make this the biggest and best Ducky Derby ever.

“I really wanted it to be geared toward the children,” she said, adding all the kiddie rides this year are free and there’s a talent show for kids under 12.

Each participant will receive a certificate of recognition.

“They can do anything they like. We have a sound system and if they need anything special, they need to let me know,” she said.

Speed said she hopes lots of kids will sign up, but it’s important they get their applications in early.

“I need their application as soon as possible and it is free to enter,” she said.

There are a few openings left for vendors, but spaces are filling fast.

The Holiday Band is performing again this year.

Speed said there’s going to be lots of chances to win cash and prizes. There’s also a car show, a cash tank and a country cornhole tournament.

Speed said be sure to bring a chair or blanket and reserve yourself a spot.
