OAK CITY — The Roanoke Valley All-stars traveled a long distance to face a local opponent in the opening round of the Eastern North Carolina Cal Ripken tournament. Thanks to the luck of the draw, Roanoke Valley took on Northampton County in the first game of the tournament and defeated their neighbors to the east, 6-2.

MANTEO — Roanoke Valley U10 All-stars Head coach Earl Wheeler was pleased with the defensive efforts of his ball squad as they committed not one error during their, 9-4, win over Currittuck during the opening round of the Eastern North Carolina Cal Ripken district tournament. The teams stayed within one or two runs of each other up until the sixth inning when Roanoke Valley opened up with four runs in the top of the inning.

Soccer is another sport area kids play for long stretches during the year and football followed in their footsteps beginning last summer with the seven-on-seven passing leagues. The Roanoke Valley brought home four of the five division titles, the first time many district titles have been won in the same season. For three days the town of Windsor might as well had been Roanoke Valley East as the local players put together a hostile take over of the Bertie county seat.

ROANOKE RAPIDS — The Roanoke Valley U12 all-stars will be saddling up and taking a short trip to Oak City to begin their quest for a Eastern North Carolina District title. The local all-star squad, coached by Rick Jordan, will be taking on another local squad in the opening round when they face the Northampton County all-stars at 11 a.m.

WINDSOR — After consecutive one-point games, spectators figured Sunday’s Eastern North Carolina District 1 U16 championship game between Roanoke Valley and Cashie would be a nail bitter, a contest that would probably come down to the wire, down to the last out and perhaps, like Friday, go into extra innings. The Roanoke Valley all-stars weren’t going to let that happen. Lead-off batter Stephanie Rose started the game with a triple, a sign of good things to come, as the Roanoke Valley squad won the district title for the second year in a row with a, 4-1, victory over Cashie.

U12s roll over Currituck, 11-3
WINDSOR — Roanoke Valley U12s Head coach Sam Conner said before his teams title game versus Currituck he wanted to get the game over with as fast as possible so his girls wouldn’t have to be out in the heat so long. Well the game may have went a little longer than he liked, but the results were still what he wanted as the U12s made it four district titles for the Roanoke Valley with a, 11-3, victory.

And the cheering was very often and seemed to never stop. If that didn’t catch anyone’s attention, than perhaps the loud bang of a ball bouncing off one of the signs on the outfield fence did. That bang was another one of the Roanoke Valley U10 all-star teams hits bouncing off the sign and the cheering was from all the runs they scored in their, 21-3, victory over Currituck.

The Roanoke Valley U14 all-stars got off to a 2-0 start in the Babe Ruth district tournament and advanced to today’s U14 championship game. In the blistering heat the Roanoke Valley girls defeated Camden, 10-4, on Friday and quickly recovered to beat Dare County, 12-4, yesterday morning. The Roanoke Valley all-stars will play in the title game today at noon against the winner of the Dare County-Camden contest. Ewers led the U12 team to back to back titles before moving up to the U14 division with a majority of the same girls.

The U10s made both games interesting (and stressful to Head Coach Bobby Martin) by pulling out come from behind victories. Friday in the tournament opener versus Cashie, the Roanoke Valley squad trailed 3-1 in the first inning before fighting back to tie the game on their way to a convincing, 16-6, victory.

The Roanoke Valley had a chance to wrap up the championship yesterday in a rematch with Cashie, but loss to the host team, 5-4, in a nail bitter to set up a third meeting between the two today at 10 am for the championship.
