M.L.K. program to be livestreamed
Due to the inclement weather this weekend and for the safety of our citizens, the 20th Annual M.L.K. Celebration Program on Monday at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Littleton will be livestreamed, starting at noon, on the Facebook page Oak Grove Media Ministry. CDC guidelines to wear a mask, temperature checks and social distancing will strictly be adhered to for all who attend.

Commissioners meeting canceled
The regular meeting of the Northampton County Board of Commissioners scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled. The next regular board meeting will be held on Feb. 7.

Breakfast offered on Saturdays
LITTLETON — American Legion Post 425, 340 Weavers Chapel Road, will hold its morning breakfasts every Saturday, starting Jan. 15 through March. Breakfast is served from 7 to 10:30 a.m., and includes eggs, sausage, herring, hash browns and coffee. Cost is $7 a plate, with proceeds going to the post. Primarily, this is a take out event, as there are very few indoor seats available at this time. Social distancing and masks will be required indoors.
MLK Drive-thru event
GASTON — A Martin Luther King Jr. drive-thru event will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Cool Spring Community Center, 101 Cherry St. There will be free breakfast to go, gift bags with useful information and PPE, and book bags for 11th and 12th grade students in attendance. BOE reschedules meeting
Due to the passing of board member Susie Evans, the Halifax County Board of Education has rescheduled its meeting to Tuesday. The board will convene in open session at 4 p.m. Shortly thereafter, the board will go into closed session. At the conclusion of closed session the board will return to open session for the regular business meeting. Nominations sought for award
HALIFAX — Nominations are now being accepted for the 2022 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. The awards program, created by the Office of the Governor in 1979, recognizes North Carolina’s most dedicated volunteers. Through the years, the award has been bestowed on thousands of North Carolinians who have shown concern and compassion for their neighbors by volunteering in their local community. Each county selects up to 10 individuals, businesses, groups/teams and one paid Director of Volunteers to be recognized for their outstanding contributions to their communities. One of the nominees will be nominated for the Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service, which is awarded to the top 20 volunteers in the state. A local committee evaluates the nominations. Nomination forms will be available for download on the Halifax County website, for pick-up from the Halifax County administrative offices (in the historic courthouse), for pick-up at all library branches, and upon request via email, mail or fax from the Halifax County Award Coordinator. Candidate filing to resume
The Wake County Superior Court issued a final judgement in the consolidated redistricting cases. The court upheld the challenged maps for the US House, NC Senate and NC House. Any party wishing to appeal this decision must file their notice of appeal within two business days. At this time, an appeal has already been filed. The court granted the NC State Board of Elections request to resume candidate filing beginning 8 p.m. Feb. 24, and close at noon March 4. ABC2 logo contest
ABC2 is launching its Recover Program logo contest with these guidelines:
• Use colors that match ABC2’s existing logos
• Incorporate community health
• One submission per contestant
• The logo must have relevance to and strengthen ABC2’s community vision
The vision is to change the world one community at a time. The ABC2 Recover Program is a community-driven program to reach across Northeastern NC to activate youth power and capacity for strong collaborative efforts making and connecting with older populations, and a deeper dive in movement for community health outcomes. The ROH model will be a center to promote community capacity building and to connect voices and work across NENC around race, wealth, resiliency, recreation, health, food security and building power.
