Descendants of the late Douglas Brown celebrated their annual reunion Aug. 2-4 in Raleigh.
A freed slave, Douglas went on to become a railroad worker. He married Melvina Brown and they had sons: Walker, Napoleon, Davie and Briston; and daughters, Kate B. Robinson, Julier Brown, Dinah Brown-Watson and Susan Brown-Pugh. Later, he married Caroline Brown and they had sons: Eddie, Jack and Alex Sr.; and daughters, Eliza B. Hicks and Lula Brown Faulcon.
Littleton natives Wayne and Waynette Kimball served as reunion hosts.
Honored at this year’s reunion were 2019 family graduates: Kevin Brown Jr. (University of Miami), Yvette Brown (Seed High School, Maryland), Stavon Drew (Toms River North, New Jersey), David Bell (Mt. Saint Vincent’s College), Savannah McLaughlin (Lincoln University, Pennsylvania), Zekaria Hill (Western Guilford High School, Greensboro), Andrew Wright Jr. (Rahway High School, New Jersey), Adrienne Brown (Northeast High School, Greensboro), Armani Bell (Edison High School, New Jersey) and Devonte Pierce (Santa Rosa High School, Florida).
Frances B. Oliver was recognized for receiving the “Woman of the Year” Award at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Littleton. Lisa Brown of Baltimore was recognized on her promotion to Principal at Steuart Hill Academic Academy. McLovely and Lillian Brown were recognized on their 55th wedding anniversary, and Amber Mack-Little was recognized for being selected Teacher of the Year at Ibrahim Elementary School in Winston-Salem.
Milestone awards were also presented at the reunion to 93-year-old Clementine Brown-Fields and husband, the Rev. Hugene Fields, also 93 of Gates; 90-year-old Annie Laura B. Royster of Maryland; 89-year-old Elizabeth Brown of Vaughan and 95-year-old Lois Brown of Columbia, Maryland.
Memorial tributes were observed in memory of Annie Mae Brown of New Jersey, who passed away on Aug. 1, 2018, at the age of 81; Herbert Brown of Maryland, who passed away on March 23, 2019, at the age of 74; Phenon M. Faulcon of Littleton, who passed away on Aug. 9, 2019, at the age of 90; and Alvin Briston Brown, 81, who passed away on Nov. 29, 2018, in Baltimore.
Justin Robinson of Fayetteville received the Annie Mae Brown Memorial BackPack Award, Tirell Brown of Maryland received the Alvin Brown Memorial Award, Angel Brown, a rising junior at Towson University in Maryland, received the Annie Mae Brown Memorial BackPack Award, and Henry Robinson of Fayetteville, received the Herbert Brown Memorial Award.
Reunion attendees came from Washington State, DC, New Jersey, California, Maryland, Virginia, Texas and North Carolina.
The reunion included a “Generations Gala,” “A Pool Party,” “A Meet and Greet,” “Zumba Workout Challenge” and “Walk for A Cause.”
