At approximately 8:42 p.m. Saturday, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department responded to the New Dixie Mart located at 142 Julian R Allsbrook Highway, in reference to Jonathan Paul Lucas, 29, of Roanoke Rapids, who carjacked the victims with a knife and stole their 2015 Chevrolet Traverse Sports Utility.

The officers encountered Lucas in the sports utility on South Street, leading to a stand-off with law enforcement, according to a press release from Chief Bobby Martin. The officers were able to deescalate the situation and apprehend Lucas without any resistance.

Lucas was arrested and charged with robbery with dangerous weapon, larceny of motor vehicle, possession of stolen motor vehicle and resisting public officer. He also received charges for felony possession of cocaine and possession drug paraphernalia. Lucas received a $125,000 secured bond and is currently housed in the Halifax County Detention Center with a court date scheduled for Nov. 23.

The RRPD is still investigating the incident.
