ROANOKE RAPIDS — Two individuals driving a vehicle were shot at approximately 11:40 a.m. Friday outside the Walmart entrance by a person exiting the facility.

The victims were last known to be in stable condition, according to a press release from Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Bobby Martin Friday afternoon. Police received a call just before noon regarding a shooting that occurred outside of the left entrance of the building, Martin said at the scene.

He said at the scene Friday, the shooter was exiting Walmart and a shot was fired. Upon arriving on scene, units discovered that a vehicle with two occupants had been shot into and two people were struck, according to the release.

One of the victims, 18, was hit in the upper body and the second victim, 17, was struck in the lower body. The victims went to a local hospital for treatment and were later taken to another facility for further treatment. The suspect fled the scene and has not been located at this time.“Obviously, we got a lot of looking into to do with this, so we are trying to go through as many angles as we can to see where we are at,” Martin said Friday at the scene.

The police department was able to identify the shooter as OQuevion R. Barnes, 19, from the Roanoke Rapids area, as the suspect. Warrants for two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle have been obtained on the suspect.
