On Tuesday, 25-year-old Tyronte Ponton of Garysburg was arrested by Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office for outstanding warrants out of Northampton County.
The warrants were the result of an investigation beginning March 1 for sexual crimes involving a juvenile female. Upon investigation by Capt. P. Jacobs, warrants were obtained on Monday against Ponton for two counts of statutory rape of a child under 15 years old, one count of indecent liberties with a child, one count of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, and one count of soliciting by computer/electronic device with juvenile and appear to have sex.
Ponton received a $1,000,000 secured bond and a court date scheduled for Thursday.
Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith stated he would like to thank Capt. P. Jacobs for his efforts in this investigation and obtaining warrants against this subject. Smith also said he encourages anyone with information or who are victims of sexual crimes involving children or themselves to please report the same to the NCSO or to the local law enforcement agency.
“The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office will continue to work closely together along with other agencies,” he said. “Our agency takes cases of this magnitude very serious. We will investigate it to the fullest extent and when it’s obvious that there is a violation of law, charges will be obtained.”
