Brett Peterson, a sixth grader at Chaloner Middle School, died in a four-wheeler wreck Sunday.
According to a press release from Chief Deputy Scott Hall with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, at about 4 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to the 900 block of Hedgepeth Road in Halifax, regarding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident involving an 11-year-old male. The single-vehicle accident occurred in a field off Hedgepeth Road just outside of Halifax. Halifax County EMS also responded to the scene. The juvenile, who was not wearing a helmet, died as a result of his injuries sustained during the accident.
Les Atkins, Public Information Officer with the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District, sent out a text message at 9:41 p.m. Sunday informing parents of Brett’s passing so they could prepare their children before school on Monday.
“We wanted to let you know so that you were able to talk with your child so they are better prepared for the day tomorrow,” the text read. “We will have counselors available if your child needs to talk with someone. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”
The RRGSD also sent out a press release Monday morning with a statement from Interim Superintendent Julie Thompson: “All of our Roanoke Rapids Graded School District counselors will be at Chaloner today to support the students and staff there as they go through this difficult time. We will continue to keep Brett’s family, his classmates, and teachers in our thoughts and prayers. We will also share information about arrangements when they become available.
“We will support each other and walk this difficult road together as a school community.”
