Candidates seeking party primary nominations for the following offices shall file their notice of candidacy with the NC State Board of Elections: all State Executives, United States senators, members of the House of Representatives of the United States and district attorneys.
Candidates seeking party primary nominations for the following offices shall file their notice of candidacy with the Halifax County Board of Elections: State senators, members of the State House of Representative and all county offices.
Candidates interested in running for sheriff will need to contact the NC Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission prior to filing. More information can be found at bit.ly/3Ck1prq.
There will be a special filing period for the following due to redistricting: Town of Enfield and the City of Roanoke Rapids. Those who are interested in running for mayor or city council/commissioner must reside inside the town boundaries.
There will also be a special filing period for the County Commissioner District 2 seat. Pursuant to G.S. 153A-27, the county commissioners filled the vacancy of the late Commissioner Marcelle O. Smith until Dec. 5, 2022. There will be a special election to fill the remainder of Commissioner Smith’s term, which ends on Dec. 2, 2024. The filing period will be open to those who reside in District 2 as it currently exists (being the district as it existed at the time of Commissioner Smith’s election in 2020). The district includes the following precincts: Conoconnara, Halifax, Hobgood, Scotland Neck, Weldon 3 and Weldon 1-2. The Roanoke Rapids 7-9 precinct is a split district and candidates will need to confirm if they are in the correct district prior to filing.
Voters who are registered as Unaffiliated are ineligible to file as a candidate in a party primary. Voters who wish to file as an Unaffiliated candidate may do so by petition for the November General Election. Please contact the Board of Elections Office as petitions will be due no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8.
Candidates cannot file for a party primary other than what is listed in the registration system. Candidates must be affiliated with their party for at least 90 days prior to the filing date.
At the time of filing a notice of candidacy, each candidate shall pay to the Board of Elections a filing fee. The filing fee is 1% on the based salary. The filing fee must be paid with an individual check or money order, or cash. Checks and money orders should be payable to the Halifax County Board of Elections. Business or corporate checks will not be accepted.
Filing will begin no earlier than at noon on Monday, Dec. 6 and end no later than noon on Friday, Dec. 17 for all contests.
