Looking Back

This photo originally ran on Aug. 13, 2014, and was submitted by Willard Oliver Sr. The photo shows his son, Willard L. “Woody” Oliver Jr., taken by Dick Kern in the 1950s. Woody was the batboy for the Halifax Paper Company (Hapco is on his shirt). His father was player-coach and held the same position for 35 years, as Halifax Paper became Albemarle Co., Horner Waldorf, Ethyl Corp. and Champion, retiring in 1994 as systems specialist. Since then the paper mill became International Paper Company, KapStone Kraft Paper Corporation and now WestRock. The Looking Back featured photo will run in the Thursday/Friday edition of The Herald. If you would like to see your old photographs printed, please bring them by the office at 1025 Roanoke Ave. in Roanoke Rapids. The office is closed to the public because of the pandemic, but photos may be put into the dropbox, addressed to Tia Bedwell with a phone number and information. You will be called to pick up your photo. Photos may also be emailed to tiabedwell@rrdailyherald.com and must be at least 25 years old.
