Looking Back

Ramonia Davis submitted this photo, circa 1961-1962, of her and her siblings. Davis said this picture was taken on Wyche Street on a Sunday, and said her mom, Rachel Eula Mae (Alston) Lee, was an excellent seamstress and cook. She made the dresses they are wearing, as well as the crinoline slips underneath. In the picture on the left is her sister, Cathy (Lee) Hawkins of Columbus, Georgia; back right is her oldest sister, Sylvia (Lee) Copeland of Hampton, Virginia; and in the front is Ramonia (Lee) Davis of Laurel, Maryland. She said her mom passed away three years ago in August 2017, and her dad, Mack G. Lee, passed in February 1976, right before Ramonia’s graduation in June. She said they all grew up in Roanoke Rapids. Her sister, Cathy, was on the flag team in the Roanoke Rapids High School Band, and Ramonia was a majorette (served as co-captain) and played clarinet in the band under the illustrious George Baird for eight years, from Rosemary Elementary through high school. The Looking Back featured photo will run every Thursday. If you would like to see your old photographs printed, please bring them by the office at 1025 Roanoke Ave. in Roanoke Rapids. The office is closed to the public because of the pandemic, but photos may be put into the dropbox, addressed to Tia Bedwell with a phone number and information. You will be called to pick up your photo. Photos may also be emailed to tiabedwell@rrdailyherald.com and must be at least 25 years old.
