At about 10:54 p.m. Monday, Officer Hunter Baker with the Roanoke Rapids Police Department was patrolling in the area of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway when he noticed a vehicle that did not have all lights operating while traveling on the roadway.

Officer Baker conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver and a passenger in the vehicle, according to a press release from Chief Bobby Martin. Upon speaking with the driver, identified as Kaijuan Brown, 19, from the Roanoke Rapids area, Officer Baker noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. After checking Brown, it was discovered his license was revoked. Officer T. Acree arrived to assist while Officer Baker checked the vehicle, where two handguns and marijuana were located. One of the handguns came back stolen out of Halifax County.

Brown was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of marijuana, driving while license revoked, fictitious tags and carrying a concealed weapon. He was given a $2,000 bond and an Oct. 28 court date. The passenger in the vehicle was identified as a 16-year-old juvenile. Officers will also seek juvenile petitions on the juvenile for possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Recovered during the stop was 3.8 grams of marijuana; one handgun was a 9mm and the other was a .40 cal.

Officer Tyler Acree assisted.
