MacNichol nets pair of goals at Clash

CARY — Catherine MacNichol, who averaged 8.3 points per match over her career at Roanoke Rapids, tallied two goals on Saturday to help North Carolina blank South Carolina, 11-0, at the Clash of the Carolinas All-Star event.

The Tar Heels, coached by Lee Horton of Charlotte Latin and Colin McDavid of Hoke County, have won two straight in the series dating to 2019.

Hunter tumbles in quarters

TRINITY — Aaron Hunter of Roanoke Rapids appeared at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A wresting championship on Saturday, falling in the quarterfinals to Sebastian Talent of Trinity.

The 182-pound senior, who won a major decision over North Lincoln’s Jordon Dininny in the opening round, concluded the year with a 15-2 mark.

Mt. Pleasant captured the 2A team crown, while Central Academy standout Kyle Montaperto was cited as the classification’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

RRHS drops opening-round match

CARY — Riley Landen and Gabby Long, the first Roanoke Rapids women’s doubles team to advance through regionals since 2013, fell in 6-1, 6-0 fashion on Friday to Salisbury’s Millie Wymbs and Abby Campion in opening-round play of the NCHSAA 2A state tournament.

The Landen-Long partnership finished the 2020-2021 season with just one loss.
