JACKSON — Jessie Martin of Northeast Academy enjoyed a banner afternoon on Tuesday at the inaugural NCISAA Tar Heel Independent Conference tennis tournament, capturing a doubles title with parter Lizzie Smith before earning a singles crown in 6-3, 6-4 fashion over Belle Turner of Ridgecroft.

The effort cemented Martin’s status as the league’s Player of the Year, while Smith and fellow Eagle Emalee Jones secured All-Conference acclaim.

“They play well together,” NEA head coach Joella Brown said of her doubles contingent, which registered an 8-0 triumph over RC’s Turner and Claire Place. “I’m going to miss Jessie next year.”

Also earning All-Tar Heel status were Perris Clayton, Emma Cobb, Addie Phelps and Annie Hayes Trowell of Lawrence Academy, in addition to Turner and Place.

Lee Hoffman of Lawrence Academy was tabbed the league’s Coach of the Year.

On Saturday, the Eagles will continue their 2020 season, when the NCISAA selection committee releases brackets for its Division I state tournament.
